Highlighting the pioneers of Mexico's coffee renaissance

Mexico is an origin near and dear to our heart. It’s home to Sustainable Harvest’s first office, and was the first origin we sourced from back in 1997. For years, it has been a source of many of our top offerings, featuring an endearing range of flavor profiles that have won over many coffee lovers.

In recent years, however, famers in Mexico have come under hard times. Roya arrived in Chiapas in 2013, and spread north to Veracruz and Oaxaca in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, Mexico, a country with more viable land for coffee cultivation than all of Central America put together, barely produced 35% of Honduras’ output. Since the outbreak, coffee yields in Oaxaca have fallen 80% as a result of the disease, causing many cooperatives in the region to dissolve.

Despite these challenges, farmers in Mexico have continued to press on, and we've been inspired by their resilience and determination to keep producing delicious specialty coffees. Their persistence has paid off: 2017 and 2018 have marked turning points in terms of the quality we've seen come out of Mexico since the outbreak. Hard work in the form of renovations and farm-level innovations are paying dividends in cup quality.

To do our part to help farmers as they revive Mexico's coffee production, we've launched an entirely new coffee line, called Single Village Oaxaca, which provides roasters access to 86+ point coffees that would have otherwise been lost to the international market amid the Roya outbreak. We're also teaming up with the Inter-American Development Bank to help farmers tackle modern production challenges in Southern Mexico.

We invite you to explore our spot offerings from top Mexico producer groups below, request a sample (or a few!), and enjoy the sweet taste of Mexico's coffee renaissance.

Single Village Oaxaca Offerings

We're excited to introduce Single Village Oaxaca, a new line of 86+ point coffees produced by smallholder farmers from Oaxaca who lack access to cooperative membership. The farmers that produced these Single Village coffees are groups of enterprising producers who have persevered in this challenging era of Mexican production without cooperative support and its accompanying organic certification, re-engineering their farms to achieve new heights of production and better coffee quality than ever before. Each lot in our Single Village line comes from a single region within Oaxaca, as indicated by the lot name.

As part of the La Lucha coffee line, Single Village Coffees represent some of the finest coffees in the Relationship Coffee supply chain and the cutting edge of Mexico’s coffee renaissance.

Offerings from Cooperatives

For us, it's no surprise that many of the cooperatives we've worked with over the long-term in Mexico have emerged from the Roya outbreak stronger than ever, even while neighboring co-ops have dissolved. These are producers who have embraced the tenets of the Relationship Coffee Model and are committed to long-term roaster relationships. Thanks to their investment in rust-resistant varieties and training in best agronomic practices, they've produced an exceptional harvest of 84+ point coffees this year and forecast a bright production future for years to come.

We've labeled these offerings as "cooperative" to reflect their larger-scale cooperative production in comparison to the Single Village offerings above.
